Raymond Alton Manning

Griffin High School Graduate

Army Technician Fifth Grade, Raymond Alton Manning graduated from Griffin High School in 1942. A year later, April 27, 1943, he would enlist in the U.S. Army to serve his country in World War 2. Rising quickly through the ranks, Manning would soon become a Tech5. He received his training at Camp Croft, Spartanburg, S.C.

Born on November 13, 1924, the young 20-year-old would head overseas to Italy. He had been overseas for only five months when he was Killed in Action on December 7, 1944. His mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Manning, who lived at 433 West Cherry Street, received the tragic news of their son’s death. His sole survivors were his parents. Tech5 Manning is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin.

Although Tech5 Manning did not come home alive, a thankful community now honors the World War II, hero. An individual plaque will be installed in Historic Downtown Griffin honoring our Hometown Hero. The plaque is sponsored by Georgia Banking Company.
