Staff Sgt. William F. Corley

Our Hometown Heroes

William F. Corley

Occupation Listed as Actor

When he enlisted in the Army-Air Corps, William F. Corley listed his occupation as, “Actor.” Born on November 3, 1909, it is not known what stage or plays the young thespian performed. Military service records show that he finished grammar school and was single.

Enlisting on April 9, 1941, Corley would fight in the entire war. He became a Staff Sgt. in the Army-Air Corps.

Apparently, Corley died at sea and the body was never recovered. This is why the official date of death is listed after the end of World War II, February 1, 1946. All efforts were exhausted to find Corley’s body in the seas of the Far East.

A monument stands to honor Staff Sgt. Corley in both Manila, Philippines and his final home, New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Yatesville, Upson County, GA.

Corley received the Purple Heart medal for his service to his country.
