Robert Linwood Womack

Lived in Rushton Mill Village

Robert Linwood Womack was drafted into the U.S. Army on August 29, 1942. He was 21 years old. Born on July 23, 1921, Womack lived with his parents in the Rushton Mill Village. Womack reported to Fort McPherson for training. Less than a year after being drafted, the young may would be killed in action.

His mother, Essie S. Womack, who lived at 414 Ray Street, was notified of her son’s death on May 25, 1943. Robert was just two months shy of his 22nd birthday. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Although Womack did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War II, soldier. An individual plaque will be installed in Historic Downtown Griffin to honor our Hometown Hero. The plaque is proudly sponsored by Brian Upson.
