Linwood P. Martin

Killed in Action in France

Linwood P. Martin was an Infantry Corporal in the U.S. Army. Born on April 12, 1922, Martin was 18 years old when he enlisted to serve his country. As part of the Spalding Greys unit, Martin would be sent overseas to fight in France. He helped free France from German occupation. Martin also fought in the Battle of St. Malo, a seaside town in France which is approximately 100 miles from the Beaches of Normandy.

The young Griffin man was killed in action on November 17, 1944, at only 22 years old. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Martin, 230 Ray Street, were notified of their son’s death. Martin also had one brother. Another brave hero had given the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

Although CPL. Martin did not come home alive, a thankful community now honors the World War II, hero. An individual plaque will be installed in Historic Downtown Griffin honoring our Hometown Hero. The plaque is sponsored by United Bank.
